Pack 493 welcomes all elementary-aged kids kindergarten through fifth grade, regardless of their gender or sex.
Our Pack is a mix of various religious affiliations, which currently includes but is not limited to the Church of Latter-day Saints, Catholicism, Lutheranism, Judaism, Hinduism, as well as Agnosticism and Atheism.
Our focus is on doing the right thing, protecting nature, helping our community, and ensuring we respect all people.
Making Scouting accessible to all regardless of family income is a core value in Pack 493. Our goal is to afford our families a dues-free Scouting experience by funding the entire program year through fundraising.
Through the Council’s annual popcorn fundraiser, our Scouts learn about perseverance, public speaking, sweat equity, teamwork, and most importantly the Cub Scout Motto, “Do Your Best.” Pack 493 was the #1 fundraising unit in the White Oak District and in the top 10 in the National Capital Area Council in popcorn sales.
This year, Pack 493 launched a native plant fundraiser to help native pollinators and birds, learn about ways to “Leave No Trace” in our own backyards, as well as help fundraise to cover new Scouts’ dues.
One of the first things our Cubs learn is what it means to be a Scout. On our honor, we will do our best to serve our community; we will help other people at all times. A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent.
Our Scouts practice these principles with every meeting and event. Our adult leaders work with our Cubs to remind them and find ways that our Cubs can be any one of these principles, even in times when it might not be easy or apparent.
Pack 493 also reminds our Cubs that Doing Your Best is not the same thing as “being the best” and that everyone’s best looks different. Our Scouts are working on being compassionate, encouraging, and inclusive.
While Pack 493 is over 50 years old, our dedicated Adult Leaders are relatively new to the Pack, all joining within the past two years. Through our leadership efforts, our Pack currently has about 50 Cubs and has grown significantly over the past year… and we have room for your family too!
Our Pack’s growth is largely due to our Adult Leaders’ dedication, word of mouth, open houses, events at nearby schools, and expanding beyond school districts to find the children who need a home in Scouting.
Pack 493 participates in Back to School Nights, and Open Houses at our target elementary schools in the beginning of the school year. We host Join Scouting events, participate in school STEM nights and always have a few Pack + Friends events on our calendar throughout the year so you can come and check out if scouting is a good fit for your family.

UUCR's Statement regarding Scouting America (formerly Scouts BSA):
"UUCR is the Charter Organization of Pack 493. While we support this individual Pack, UUCR continues to be deeply troubled by certain, harmful historical practices and norms of Scouts BSA and we are committed to the continued transformation of these aspects of Scouts BSA culture. We also recognize that no organization is defined solely by its worst acts. UUCR is committed to ensuring that our UU principles and values continue to be fully integrated into the culture of Pack 493."
